IZABELLE

Izabelle woke feeling warm, safe, and slightly sore in all the right places. She languished in the feeling of being tucked in the hollow created by Jake’s shoulders wrapped around her. She savored the gentle rocking she felt as his chest moved in and out with each slow, sleepy breath. She knew she had slept in later than normal again. The sun wasn’t just peeking through the window shades but was fully asserting itself in its midmorning glory. But unlike their first morning together, she didn’t feel the compulsion to launch herself out of the bed toward her laptop.

She didn’t even really want to be awake. After the events of last night, she wanted nothing more than to remain in this peaceful place, wrapped in a blanket of bicep. She knew mixing up Jake, her presentation, all of her baggage, and stress was a risk. Yet, there was some small part of her that also knew it was inevitable. And after last night, she knew it was worth it. But she had to check back in with the reality that the presentation was inching ever closer, and it wasn’t going to polish itself. She sighed and pressed her cheek against his warm arm one last time, savoring the moment, then started to wiggle free. Maybe I wore him out and he won’t wake up.

“Please tell me you’re just getting up to pee and you’re coming right back,” he said sleepily into her shoulder.

Damn. “I mean, I do have to pee, but it is the time of the morning in which responsible adults wake up.” She made a move toward the edge of the bed, but he hauled her back into his chest. “Trust me, as much as I would like to lie around in bed all day, we’ve got slides to run and presentations to perfect.”

He shifted slightly. “We?”

Izabelle’s stomach sank. The we was probably an overstep. “If you don’t want to anymore, it’s—”

Jake gave her a squeeze as he interrupted her. “I very much do want to. I want to watch you do anything and everything. I was only asking to make sure you were okay with me still being involved in the presentation. I don’t want you to feel you have to do something you’re uncomfortable with. If anything has changed since last night, then just say the word and I will leave you be for the day. But just the day, I’m still going to claim your nights.”

Izabelle relaxed into him, relieved. “Yes. I still need the help. So, if you’re willing to kill another day of vacation with me, then that would be amazing. Can’t say it’s going to be as sexy as last night, but…”

“I very much beg to differ. Watching you talk business—” He growled into her neck. “—it very much works for me.” Nipping at her shoulder he pulled her in tighter against him. “But seriously. Thank you for trusting me with this. I know how big of a deal this is, and I’m honored.
